CANTERBURY EARTHQUAKE

Letter to the Editor by Peter Diver 27/11/2010
I am concerned with a cut-off date for earthquake sewer and stormwater claims of December 4.
I have been in the drainage industry for years, and know only too well that the earthquakes will have fractured most earthenware drains, and PVC drains, popping PVC joings, particualry in liquefaction areas.
Since the earthquake, my company has videoed drains; cracked sewers are almost universal in liquefaction areas.
The problem is that unless damage is severe enough to cause a blockage, people will be unaware that they have problems. The problems won't show until roots get in or undermining causes collapse.
My advice is to outlay for a video record of your drains and lodge a claim before December 4 in the event of a disaster down the track.

PLUMBING COMPANY GOES GREEN

The following article was in the Star 27 Nov 2010, which talks about how we take the environment seriously and accordingly, run our vehicles on biodiesel and use GPS units. This not only creates more efficiency, but reduces carbon emissions.

WATERSMART GULLIES

Ever wonder how water is wasted from showers etc?

Now you can still water your garden when there is water restrictions in place with recycled water.

With the watersmart gully water recycling system you can recycle greywater (water from your laundry and shower/bath) and divert it to your garden. The watersmart gully replaces the gully dish outside the house. With the turn of a handle or flick of a switch (electric version), you can choose to divert your water to your garden topsoil in dry weather or to the sewer if your garden does not require watering.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE SYSTEM

* The system utilises only the cleanest sources of water from the household - laundry and shower/bath - ideal for irrigating mosts plants due to the low detergent level.
* The system does not store the greywater - it is pumped immediately out to the garden, which means there is no storage of the water and no potential to grow pathogens, i.e no bad smells
*The system is fail safe, so in the event of a pump failure or blockage, water flows directly to the sewer. i.e. no overflowing to your stormwater or surrounding area.
* The system has a gauze filter that prevents lint, hair and other residues blocking the downstream irrigation system;
* It has a super quiet submersible pump, which turns on automatically when water enters the gully (and off again when the gully is empty).
